Supporting Local Wellbeing: Sensory Garden Opens at Avalar Equine Therapy

Avalar creates sensory garden near Northallerton

We’re delighted to share how Broadacres’ Community Development Fund has helped bring a new sensory therapy garden to life at Avalar Equine Therapy and Education, a charity based near Northallerton.

Avalar uses the gentle power of horses to support children and adults facing challenges such as special educational needs, anxiety, communication difficulties and low confidence. Through equine-assisted activities like grooming, leading and spending time with the animals, people often make breakthroughs in confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Thanks to a grant from Broadacres’ Community Development Fund, Avalar has been able to create a dedicated sensory therapy garden, a peaceful outdoor space where service users can take a break, enjoy fresh air, eat lunch, chat with others or work on their Unit Awards in a calm environment. The area has also been leveled to ensure it’s accessible to those with mobility, sight or balance needs.

The Community Development Fund supports local groups and charities right here in the areas where Broadacres has homes. All awards are decided by Broadacres residents themselves, helping to ensure local priorities are supported and celebrated.

Gemma Parkes, trustee at Avalar and an experienced special needs teacher, explains how the garden complements their work

“The outdoor space gives users a moment to relax and reflect, often contributing to their progress and confidence outside the therapy sessions.”

We’re proud to support initiatives that make a real difference to people’s lives and strengthen connections across our communities.
