Having a safe space to call home can be the first step towards rebuilding a life. For Scott, supported housing provided the stability and support he needed to overcome significant challenges and look towards a brighter future.
A former professional jockey, Scott found himself experiencing homelessness after facing difficulties in his personal life, including alcohol dependency.
Living in a horsebox in the Yorkshire Dales, Scott was referred to Broadacres and offered accommodation through our Rough Sleepers Accommodation Programme (RSAP).
After initially being placed in emergency accommodation, he moved into a fully furnished flat in Northallerton, where he received dedicated support to help him regain stability and work towards independent living.
Scott began settling into his new home, but his journey took an unexpected turn when he suffered a serious brain injury, leaving him in a coma for three months.
His recovery was far from certain, but with specialist medical care, determination and ongoing support, Scott gradually began to make progress.
Throughout this difficult period, Broadacres colleagues helped reconnect Scott with his family, providing an important link between him and his loved ones during his recovery.
Despite everything he had to go through, Scott made remarkable progress.
He overcame his alcohol dependency, rebuilt relationships with his family and started a new business as a jockey’s agent, drawing on his experience in horse racing to support the next generation of riders.
He also rebuilt his relationships with his daughters and was able to celebrate their achievements, including one representing England in football and the other beginning her career as a professional jockey.
Having made significant progress through his supported housing journey, Scott was preparing to take the next step towards a permanent Broadacres home.
Scott’s story highlights the difference that having a safe home and the right support can make. From experiencing homelessness to rebuilding family relationships and finding new opportunities, his journey demonstrates why supported housing is so important.
At Broadacres, we’re proud to provide homes and support that help people build confidence, regain independence and take positive steps towards their future.
