How do I exchange my home?

Some tenants can exchange their home, however this depends on the type of tenancy you hold. You must have our written permission to exchange your property.

A mutual exchange (or home swap) is when two or more tenants swap their properties to better meet their housing needs. You can exchange with another Broadacres tenant, a tenant of another housing association, or a tenant of another council.

Useful information

Things to consider when thinking about swapping homes

We may refuse you application, but we will write to you with our reasons why:

  • You will need to make sure that you do not owe us any rent
  • If you have been a tenant of your current property for less than 2 years, you will be charged for the cost of the gas and electric safety checks, this is approximately £200
  • When you exchange, and move into your new property, you will need to sign a new agreement
  • Exchanging your property can affect your right to buy

If you are within the first 12 months of a new tenancy you will only be able to move if you have had a significant change to your circumstances.

How do I find someone to exchange with?

Broadacres have partnered with www.Homeswapper.co.uk the UK’s leading mutual exchange service. The Homeswapper service is the largest national mutual exchange service for social housing tenants wanting to swap homes both locally and nationally.

As a tenant of Broadacres, you can use www.Homeswapper.co.uk free of charge. The Homeswapper service may help you to find a move more quickly than you would by waiting on our choice based letting list.

Using the service is simple, just:

  • Visit www.homeswapper.co.uk to register or download the FREE app, available on the App Store and on Google Play
  • Enter details of your current home and the home you want
  • See your possible swaps

Once your registration has been approved by Broadacres you will be able to use the website or the App to contact anyone you are interested in swapping with.

If your swap involves more than two properties

If you are in a ‘chain’ of more than two properties it is advised that you contact us as soon as possible.
