Home – Your home – Maintenance and repairs – Safety in your home
Information about keeping you safe in your home, including fire, gas, electrical, carbon monoxide, asbestos and water safety
You cannot see, taste or smell carbon monoxide, but it is extremely dangerous and can be fatal. We fit carbon monoxide alarms in all homes where the heating appliances may produce carbon monoxide.
We are legally responsible for servicing any gas appliances that are owned and installed by us in your home every 12 months. This takes between 45 and 90 minutes, depending on the appliances in your home, and at the end of the service we must give you a copy of the latest safety check record, called a ‘CP12’.
We have a legal duty to make sure that you, or anyone entering or using your home, are not put at risk and the electrical system in your home remains in a safe condition.
We do this by carrying out an inspection of your home every 5 years to check the condition of your home’s electrical installation against the UK Standard.
Your safety is our highest priority. We do everything we reasonably can to help prevent fires and make sure you remain safe if there is a fire. There are also several things you can do to help avoid fires and stay safe in an emergency.
We have a legal obligation to make sure you are aware of the possible causes and symptoms of Legionnaires’ disease, so you can identify any problems easily and report any concerns to us.
Do not worry if asbestos is found in your home or that you suspect something is asbestos, it is only likely to become a problem if it is disturbed.
