Supporting our apprentice to build a career in joinery

Supporting the next generation of talent

We’re proud to be supporting one of our apprentices as he builds the skills and experience needed for a career in construction.

Tom Johnson, who is currently completing his Level 2 NVQ in Joinery with Broadacres, has recently been working on site with Brierley Homes to complete key elements of his apprenticeship portfolio. Alongside his on-the-job training, Tom attends York College one week each month and is already planning to progress onto his Level 3 qualification.

As part of his development, Tom has been gaining hands-on experience across a range of joinery tasks, helping him build the knowledge and confidence needed to succeed in the trade. He hopes to secure a full-time role with Broadacres once qualified, with ambitions to join our Empty Homes team.

Tom said,

“I’ve been able to learn new skills, including roofing work that I hadn’t experienced before. I’ll be going back on site at Kirkby Malzeard to complete work on stairs, which is the final piece of evidence I need for my portfolio.”

We work closely with partners like Brierley Homes to make sure our apprentices get the broad, real-world experience they need.

Dan Donaghy, Construction Manager at Broadacres said,

“I started my own career as an apprentice joiner, so I know how important it is to get a range of practical experience early on. Opportunities like this help apprentices build their skills, confidence and understanding of the trade. It’s great to see Tom progressing so well, and we’re grateful to Brierley Homes for supporting his development.”

By investing in apprenticeships, we’re helping to create opportunities for local people and supporting the next generation of skilled trades across our communities.
