Broadacres reach a new milestone in energy-efficient home upgrades

Investing in warmer, more efficient homes

We are continuing to build momentum in our work to improve the energy efficiency of homes across North Yorkshire, with plans to significantly increase the number of properties receiving retrofit upgrades over the next year.

As part of our ongoing carbon reduction programme, we aim to complete further energy-saving improvements in a further 300 homes during 2026, doubling the number of properties we retrofit each year. This work focuses on reducing reliance on fossil fuels, improving household energy use, and helping our customers keep their homes warm and affordable to run.

Our upgrades include thicker loft insulation, solar panels and air source heat pumps, all designed to improve comfort while lowering energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Helen Ball, our Head of Sustainability, said:

“We are really pleased with the progress we’ve made so far in improving the energy efficiency of our older homes, and we’re looking forward to building on this in 2026. The feedback we receive from our customers shows just how positive these improvements can be, particularly when it comes to reducing energy bills. In the current economic climate, this support is more important than ever.”

This programme forms part of our wider Sustainability Strategy, which sets out our commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

One of our customers already benefiting from the upgrades is Dennis Carr, who lives in Seamer near Middlesbrough with his wife Helen and their son Stafford, in a three-bedroom property built in the 1930s.

Dennis said:
“People of our generation are naturally wary of change, so we were a little reluctant at first. We weren’t sure how disruptive the work would be or whether the house would still feel warm.

“But we decided to go ahead, and it’s been the best thing we’ve done. The system is easy to use, the house is always warm, and it now only costs us around £4-£5 a week to heat the whole home.”

As part of the scheme, we installed an air source heat pump, a new central heating and hot water system, new radiators, solar panels, additional loft insulation and smart air bricks to help reduce draughts.

To date, we have installed air source heat pumps in around 900 properties and solar panels on 250 homes. Retrofit works have already been completed in 250 homes, with plans to increase this to 550 by the end of 2026.

We have also secured £1,857,000 from Wave 3 of the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund, which we are match-funding to support the continued delivery of this work.

By continuing to invest in sustainable homes, we are helping our customers live more comfortably today, while supporting a greener, lower-carbon future for our communities.
