A grant from Broadacres is helping a much-loved hospice extend its reach to the rural communities of North and East Yorkshire.

Saint Catherine’s Hospice, Scarborough, is determined to make a strong start to 2022 after some face-to-face services had to be paused during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The hospice aims to provide the best possible care and quality of life for those with life-limiting illnesses, providing therapy, counselling, and medical care at the hospice itself and through an outreach team.

As well as the palliative care and cancer treatment preparation always offered, the Wellbeing service is now being adapted to offer long Covid breathlessness clinics free of charge.

A grant of £500 from the Broadacres Community Development Fund will help the hospice to re-launch the Wellbeing service, explore new ways to reach those in need across North and East Yorkshire and support fundraising events.

Susan Stephenson, Communications and Marketing Manager at Saint Catherine’s Hospice, said: “Grants like this are essential to help us re-launch and improve the reach of services that have been paused due to the pandemic.

“Each year it costs around £5 million to provide support free of charge to local communities. We have learnt a lot through lockdown about remote working and the importance of using new methods to address the needs of our users and to reach communities, particularly rural communities, in need of our help.”

Broadacres Community Development Fund supports organisations, groups, and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes, and grants are approved by the Association’s own residents, via a Community Development Fund Panel.

Broadacres resident Mags Crook, who is on the Panel, said: “St Catherine’s Hospice does an amazing job supporting people in Scarborough and the surrounding areas, and the Wellbeing service for those suffering with long Covid will help even more.

“We had no hesitation in awarding our largest possible grant and we hope it has a positive impact in the community.”
