Demoted tenancy
What is a demoted tenancy?
If you behave in an anti-social manner we can
apply for a demotion order against you.
We will consider using a demotion order to
give the tenant a chance to change their behaviour
If the court grants a demotion order, your
assured tenancy will be demoted to to a shorthold
tenancy.
This is a less secure form of tenancy and
means that you will lose certain rights, for example the right to
buy.
How long will the tenancy be demoted?
Demoted tenancies usually last for one year.
If there are no problems during that time, you will automatically
be given a new assured tenancy.
What will happen if I break my tenancy agreement again?
If you break your tenancy agreement again (for
example by not paying the rent), we can ask the court to give us
possession of your property. The court cannot refuse our
request.
